Every month NellyRodi beauty experts show you a selection of the most interesting trends on TikTok. Here’s the update for November 2024!

Dudes and makeup

Over the past several years and with the rise of social media, men’s makeup has been gaining ground. Male influencers, often from the queer community, have taken this industry by storm, sharing their passion for makeup and often using humorous videos. Figures like James Charles in the United States or Fabian in France with his brand For.me are using a highly expressive style to lead a movement that’s bringing more diversity and new faces to the beauty world. They’re blurring traditional gender binaries and their audience is mostly female.

This reality, however, may be about to shift. On TikTok, heterosexual men are now beginning to show an interest in makeup. These “regular dudes” who initially might have been indifferent to or even mocked the idea of men wearing makeup are gradually adopting beauty routines mainly focused on ultra-natural looks to cover imperfections. Videos under the #meninmakeup and #boymakeup hashtags are multiplying (over 100,000 posts). Men wearing makeup in some Asian countries is already popular, and McKinsey reports that by 2024, one-third of those young men will regularly wear makeup, compared to 10% in Europe and 5% in the United States – numbers that are expected to rise, especially in the Western world.

At only 19 years old, TikTok’s new it-boy Bach Buquen has over 6 million followers and has become the movement’s ambassador. Presenting a conventionally masculine look, he’s updating the image of the muscular man by confidently and easily embracing his style. He has gained fame through viral videos amassing tens of millions of views, where he applies makeup on the Paris metro, normalizing the idea that guys can wear makeup too. His relaxed, nonchalant approach may encourage more reserved men to view makeup as a natural, accessible routine.

Is makeup becoming completely genderless? With the initial success of men’s skincare brands like Horace and Kiehl’s, makeup also seems poised to introduce new product lines that specifically target men or are genderless. This shift opens up fresh opportunities for brands to reach a broader audience and further boost sector growth. Brands already committed to diversity and queer culture could go even further by addressing this new audience, who brings their own unique aspirations and needs to the table.

Dare wrinkles for Halloween!

This Halloween season, Tim Burton’s new “Beetlejuice” movie has sparked a wave of creativity on TikTok (1.5 million posts), with the Beetlejuice lips trend, a new technique that can’t be reproduced by those who use fillers or Botox.

The technique involves layering two lip colors – one with relaxed lips and the second while making a “duck face” and applying color to the exposed areas of the lips. Once applied, a big smile reveals a cracked effect.

Influencers quickly embraced this method for more than lips, applying it to other areas of the face where wrinkles might appear, like laugh lines, the corners of the eyes or the forehead. The technique celebrates expression lines and wrinkles, turning these often-stigmatized areas into true works of art. This is how the #wrinklemakeup trend was born, quickly followed by the #anti-botoxmakeup hashtag. The latter emphasizes the aesthetic advantages of avoiding Botox, stating that this unique makeup look would be impossible to produce on skin treated with injections.

By highlighting rather than hiding natural features, this approach marks a turning point compared to other makeup tutorials. Inspired by the witchy face movement on TikTok, some women are accentuating certain facial features, such as a pointed nose or prominent chin, to embrace and redefine their own vision of beauty. Inspired by the witch archetype – a charismatic character now freed from norms – they proudly display features often seen as unusual and transform them into assets for personal expression.

The undetectable era

It all started with a video of Christina Aguilera that flooded TikTok feeds and sparked excitement with over 2 million reactions. Sporting a monochromatic cosplay look for a performance in Osaka, the pop icon, now 43, appeared 20 years younger thanks to crystal-embedded makeup and elegantly styled hair. One comment perfectly summed up the general feeling, “Wait, are we back in 2002?” But more than a nod to Christina Aguilera’s youth, the video highlights a revolutionary trend in beauty, the undetectable era.

The #UndetectableEra hashtag spotlights this trend of moving from an overdone look to a barely-there aesthetic. Instead of noticeable, artificial transformations, new procedures strive to create a subtle, natural rejuvenation and make the modifications virtually invisible. People, especially celebrities, are moving away from traditional cosmetic surgery to embrace these new techniques which restore faces in a far more natural way that’s true to their younger appearance.

This evolution is credited to notable advances in skincare and aesthetic medicine, especially with the use of cutting-edge technology like growth factors. Previously, these treatments required blood samples from patients, but they now come from diverse sources such as bone marrow, umbilical cords and even lab-engineered bio-synthetic processes. These innovations help improve skin texture and youthfulness by gently and gradually stimulating regeneration. As a result, invasive surgery is becoming less necessary, giving way to regular treatments that deliver effective results with minimal recovery time.

This shift towards more subtle results is not only due to technical innovations but also a change in aesthetic preferences. “The last few years have seen an excess of visible transformations, but today, the trend is towards a natural, refined look,” says Dr. Tripathi, a facial plastic surgeon.

For brands and clinics, this trend opens up new opportunities. Consumers are increasingly looking for rejuvenation solutions that aren’t obvious, and high-tech skincare product lines are multiplying. In this context, TikTok has become a choice platform for sharing and democratizing these new practices which make beauty accessible without stigma. It’s proof that the very idea of physical transformation is evolving toward something more nuanced.
