The latest news in Fashion and Luxury (episode 14)

News

NellyRodi’s fashion and luxury experts share their picks from the market’s major updates. Episode 14 covers March 2024.

MARCH 4 – Coperni innovates again with a bag made of air

Coperni pushed the boundaries of the impossible by introducing a handbag composed of 99% air at its Fall-Winter 2024 runway show during Paris Fashion Week. The Air Swipe Bag is made from silica aerogel, a nanomaterial used by NASA for space missions, making this bag the lightest in the world at only 33 grams. Designed in collaboration with Professor Ioannis Michalous, the bag is revolutionary in terms of sustainability and durability. The achievement embodies the innovative spirit of Coperni’s founders, Arnaud Vaillant and Sébastien Meyer, both avid space enthusiasts. They also surprised us last year with a bag made from fragments of a lunar meteorite.

MARCH 14 – Measures against fast fashion

On March 14 the French National Assembly unanimously passed measures to curb the expansion of fast fashion and ultra-fast fashion. The sector’s brands, known for offering very low-priced clothing, are criticized for their environmentally disastrous production methods and poor workers’ conditions. The proposed law, adopted in the first reading, aims to limit their visibility and accessibility by, for example, banning advertisements for their clothes. The proposed law would place France at the forefront of countries legislating against fast fashion. The vote notably echoes the announcement a few days ago by the mayor of Nice that he had refused the installation of a pop-up store organized by the fast-fashion brand Shein.

MARCH 25 – Versace opens a luxury hotel in Macao

More than ten years after its announcement, the Palazzo Versace hotel has finally opened its doors in Macao, China. It’s the first Asian five-star hotel for the Italian house, which is managed and owned by Capri Holding. Located in the Cotai zone in the Macao region, the 271-room palace is part of the luxurious Grand Lisboa Palace Resort Macau hotel complex. With a wellness center, two pools and two restaurants, Palazzo Versace embodies the house’s codes with its flamboyant, opulent, elegant style. Inspired by Italian neoclassical palaces, it also features some of the brand’s signatures, such as the Medusa and the Greek key, combined with Chinese motifs such as the golden dragon. The palace is the second Versace hotel, following one in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates.

MARCH 26 – The latest collaborations at Maison Margiela

It’s a busy time for collaborations for the MM6 Maison Margiela label. On February 28, the brand collaborated with the Korean brand Gentle Monster on a collection of retro-futuristic glasses. Under the direction of Margiela Creative Director John Galliano, the collection was inspired by the themes of “time and transmission, as well as the industrial universe.” In addition, a few days ago MM6 Maison Margiela announced a new capsule collection in collaboration with the Supreme brand. Available since March 28, the capsule includes a variety of unique pieces, ranging from a faux fur coat to a skateboard deck. Finally, in the latest issue of Vogue Scandinavia, artist Björk made a sensation on the cover of the magazine, wearing a dress from the 2024 Artisanal collection.
