What do we look for in our romantic relationships?

Meeting new people is fascinating. Whether the encounters are romantic or friendly, or for a night or a lifetime, they energize us.

NellyRodi experts teamed up with happn to create a study of 4,000 of the app’s users around the world – from France to Brazil, India, Norway and beyond – to identify the trends that will shape encounters in 2024.

What do we look for in our romantic relationships? Here’s an exclusive overview of three of the five happn x NellyRodi trends.

1) QUIRKY ROMANCE:

Single people are growing in numbers, and, tired of romantic dramas, they’re choosing romance with an ironic touch. These modern-day lovers play with clichés about love and make ridicule and comedy their favorite allies. They teach us that a relationship, far from only being an all-consuming passion, can also be invented with frivolity and humor!

The symptoms

“THEY LIVED HAPPILY EVER AFTER AND HAD MANY CHILDREN…”

Intense imagination and projection happen as soon as the first contacts with a Crush.

POV: WHEN YOU REFUSE TO SEE WHAT’S IN FRONT OF YOU

Ignoring the signals that a relationship is not moving in the direction the user had imagined.

“IT’S A SIGN!”

An attraction to specific details and characteristics.

2) LOVE OUTSIDE THE BOX:

Faced with the appearance of celebrity relationships that are as surprising as they are newsworthy (such as Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner), many singles have fresh hope that by widening their romantic horizons and putting aside their preconceived ideals, they’ll find their perfect match!

The symptoms

“BREAK THE CHAINS”

In-depth thinking about personal expectations free of societal pressure.

POV: WHEN YOU BUILD ON A MISUNDERSTANDING

An active breaking down of stereotypes and an expansion of selection criteria.

“FAST & GENEROUS”

Intense spontaneity and flexibility concerning expectations about interactions and relationships.

3) ICE-BREAKER:

Have you ever had long series of text messages without being able to set up a meeting with your Crush? Or conversely, how many times have you drunk coffee with a Crush without really feeling that you got to know them? Because of this, a growing number of single people are quickly insisting on an IRL meeting. After a brief online exchange, they choose a fun date activity to give them a better perspective on their Crush.

The symptoms

“IN EXCITEMENT MODE”

Spontaneity or impatience to meet your Crush. The need to learn about the slightest details of their personality … and fast!

“ROSE-TINTED GLASSES”

A romantic outlook with a desire for human contact. No activity is too special. Everyone deserves made-to-measure.

“BOREDOM …”

Monotonous meetings are old news. Drinking coffee on a terrace is no longer in, so be more creative!
